Breathe California offers key support services to help those affected by lung disease enjoy a higher quality of life. To address Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Breathe California co-developed the Better Breathing course with San Francisco General Hospital.

Better Breathing Course Overview

display146Better Breathing is a course that was designed by experts to help people live better and breathe better with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The target audience for this course includes people who have been diagnosed with COPD, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and/or chronic, severe asthma and/or their caregivers. Taught by COPD educators and health care professionals who staff the Chest and Asthma/COPD Clinics at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH), Better Breathing aspires to empower people to improve the quality of their own lives through education and self-management support. This is a free course that is currently only taught in English. Participants are encouraged to attend all four sessions since different topics are covered in each session.

This course teaches participants about:

  • COPD: How COPD affects the lungs, symptoms, diagnosis, and management
  • Effective self-management
  • How a COPD Action Plan can guide daily self-management
  • Breathing and coughing techniques to reduce symptoms
  • COPD medicines and correct usage
  • Home oxygen therapy
  • Smoking cessation
  • Healthy habits: Nutrition, staying active, avoiding respiratory triggers
  • Energy conservation
  • How to improve communication with health care providers
  • Advance care planning
  • Strategies to cope with living with COPD

Better Breathing is proudly presented by the Healthy San Francisco (HSF) Asthma and COPD Program at SFGH, which aims to develop innovative ways to improve care of patients with asthma and COPD throughout the city of San Francisco. The HSF Asthma and COPD Program is a proud member of the SFGH HSF Chronic Care Redesign Project Group, which is supported by Kaiser Community-Benefit funding, the San Francisco Department of Public Health (DPH), and SFGH.
