024u

On February 16th and April 7th, Breathe California Golden Gate trained three new Oxygen for You (O24u™) Air Quality Improvement Pilot Program facilitators to work with Bay Area 4th and 5th graders.  Launched in the fall of 2016, the O24u™ program, funded by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD), is provided for elementary school children in an afterschool program setting within communities that experience higher levels of air pollution than other regions, as identified through BAAQMD’s Community Air Risk Evaluation (CARE) Program. Facilitators have the important role of educating our youth on topics concerning indoor and outdoor air quality through short lessons and discussions, which are then reinforced though fun, hands-on activities and demonstrations!

The new O24u™ facilitators will work with our community partners in West Contra Costa and on the Peninsula to teach youth about:

  1. Air Pollution and Environmental Changes
  2. Health Effects of Air Pollution
  3. Toxic Indoor Environments
  4. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot
  5. Alternate Fuels and Renewable Energy
  6. Kids Can Make a Difference for Clean Air

Each module contains topic specific activities empowering children to make a change for clean air. Examples of this include integrating alternative non-toxic chemicals into their homes, incorporating the 4Rs (reduce, rot, recycle and reuse) habits into their everyday lives and encouraging them to be advocates for clean air within their community. O24u™ facilitators teach students how to make their own all-purpose cleaner with simple and safe ingredients, play Air Quality Simon Says to help kids learn about the Air Quality Index scale, and allow students to put their imagination to work by creating their idea of a clean air city with arts and crafts!

In addition to curriculum training, facilitators received a refresher in classroom management, as well as insight into O24u™ best practices. They will continue to receive on-going technical assistance from the Breathe California Youth Programs Coordinator throughout the duration of the program. Our facilitators continue to make a tremendous impact on the local community by raising awareness about clean air and lung health, ultimately furthering the mission and vision of Breathe California!
